Rachel and Kathryn: thank you very much! Lianne: I am a total noob. I don't have much faith in my own abilities when I am working from a project book. I suspect it will be more telling if or when I manage to come up with something that doesn't come from a book! But thank you anyway, yours and everybody else's kind words do wonders for my low confidence!

You're definately getting to grips with pastels pretty quick, your pictures are nice and bold with good strong colours they look great, can't wait to see you do something on your own without the book excercises.

Thanks Keith, I appreciate that coming from somebody with your experience and skill. To be honest I was just going to "scribble" something in graphite and then try to apply colour to it with pastel but I was hoping I'd come up with something better! Maybe if I can learn enough I will be able to draw a portrait of my dog or something.... or maybe some flowers, but less of a still life than my first one, rather with just the flower as a focus. Ok so I finally tried to do something in pastel without a book to work from - I used a reference though! This one is a purple lily, with the reference taken from www.interfacelift.comI think it could probably do with more work, so all suggestions/comments/critiques welcome!

R xx Thank you so much Rachel I think yours is one of the only comments I've had on this so far, I appreciate it very much! To be honest it only took me around 2 hours - some of my fave tunes in the background and uninterrupted drive to finish it pretty much made the time fly. I did get stuck getting some of the detail into the petals, because the petals in the reference photo actually have fine lines in them, which of course really alters the colour throughout the whole image. But the beauty of pastel is its very impressionistic so as long as you get a strong impression of the flower and the petals, it doesn't have to be exact. Wow I'm so new at pastels that I don't feel I'm qualified to give tips! My only tip is to do stuff like this only when you feel driven to, and take advantage of the situation. Get comfortable, get your fave tunes on, really enjoy the atmosphere and the activity. And never ever be afraid to apply colour - pastels can be relatively easily corrected and/or adjusted, so far as I've experienced. Although that is probably not as true for really detailed work - Keith would know more about detailed pastel work than I!
