When I picked up drawing again beginning 2006 I had a hard time finding what i needed to draw with. Yes i had bought me a couple of graphite pencils, an eraser, a pencil sharpener and some paper. But i watched some people do some amazing things and could not do the same, like go really dark.
So here is some of the equipment I use in all of my drawings and what i use them for.
First off, 3 graphite pencils 2H, H and another H, why two H's. Well i use 3 different Brent's, Conte Paris, Derwent and Koh-i-nor. But none draw the same not even the same hardness. So my point don't just buy a Brent because someone say's it's the best, it might be the best for them but that say's nothing about you, try stuff out and decide what you find best to use.
Carbon pencils: For drawing, the +'s they have imo are that you only need 6 to get all the gray's graphite pencils (12) can create, the "dust" is very easily blended so you can create very smooth fading shades. The - is that it's hard to erase and very small details can be hard to draw. If you use carbon in combination with graphite you should remember this: graphite on carbon = , carbon on graphite = .
Q-tips/ear buts: I use them to blend, softly rub the spot you'd like to be silky smooth till you get the desired effect. You can blend in several way's, two of them are: circular (very use full to get real looking skin) and Cross-hedge (up-down, left/right) i recommend to have a look at Shiva's blending thread because that cover it all -> www.lianneamanda20.proboards46.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=1175039254
Erasers: I use several. 1) Normal eraser. 2) Kneadable eraser, useful to take out small details or make a cigar shape of it and use a stumping motion to bring back light in your drawing. 3) pencil shaped eraser, useful to take out small details or bring back high lights in hair or eye's. and 4) an eraser in a tube like thingy, this one imo is the most all round but master of non of the erasing jobs.
Sharpeners: used to sharpen pencils
The knife/scalpel: used to create a really sharp tip at my pencil, much sharper than a normal sharpener can make. Watch your fingers though and always sharpen in a motion away from you.
Blending bulb's: used to blend, like with the q-tips. They can be a bit hard to master but still very useful. Like with the pencils try different type's because there are several kinds like hard, soft, made of rolled up paper etc, etc.
Brushes: again used for blending but most importantly i use them to "drag" shades (the dust, if you put your finger tip on a dark shade you'll see some dust on your finger, thats the dust you'll drag around) so they really fade and don't just stop.
Cloth: I put that under my drawing hand so it doesn't leave grease on the paper that can become nasty stains or finger prints, mine used to be white and light brown strips now it's gray from the pencil dust
